Hurricane
Katrina Disaster Information Links - USA
Contributed
by Rob
Howard
The
recent hurricane disaster that has devastated much of Louisiana,
Mississippi, Alabama, and the city of New Orleans in particular,
is a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions. Louisiana is the home
of Cajun and Zydeco, and many accordion players will have been caught
up in this unfolding story of horrors. New Orleans is, of course,
the epicenter of traditional jazz and blues, and many musicians
are doubtless similarly affected.
Making enquiries about musicians at this time is not easy, but the
following contacts may be able to help:- The radio stations WWOZ,
dedicated mainly to jazz, and KBON, which specialises in Zydeco
& Cajun, are likely to report news of accordionists and other
musicians. It is possible that the Manager of the Musicians' Union
in New Orleans, J. Kim Foreman, may have information as the MU is
currently attempting to create a database following the tragedy.

Piaf
Connection Concert, Melbourne - Australia
Contributed by Rob
Howard
Melbourne
accordionist, Bernadette
Conlon, in conjunction with one of Australia's most innovative,
bilingual, French/English primary schools, Camberwell Primary, created
a cabaret spectacular, which featured the music and life of Edith
Piaf. The show was performed in the traditional setting of a cabaret,
which set the gritty street urchins of Paris, beside the chic upper
set of the 1930s.
The cabaret was accompanied by the solo accordion of Bernadette Conlon,
who arranged the music for the elaborate choreography, which included
the Can-Can, depicted scenes of Piaf's life, her acrobat father, her
recordings and some of the many loves of her life. In particular,
the cabaret focused on the love of Piaf's life, world middleweight
champion boxer, Marcel Cerdan, who died in a plane crash in 1949,
and for whom Piaf wrote Hymn to Love.
Marcel's great grand niece, Olivia Cerdan, who is a student at Camberwell
Primary School, sang in this moving production, Piaf's two most famous
songs La Vie En Rose and No Regrets, playing both Piaf and cabaret
singer Juliette Greco.
The professional production was much more than simply a school play,
with the accordion and Bernadette
as its centrepiece. Three performances were given of this wonderful
show.
