Dr
William
Schimmel Featured in New Opera Recording, New York - USA
Contributed by Rob
Howard
New
World Records has recently released a two CD, one hour and forty minute
chamber opera: 'The Floating Box', by Jason Kao Hwang. It traces the
history of Chinese immigrants and their settling in New York's Chinatown.
The libretto is by Catherine Filloux. The opera features an elaborate
accordion part performed by Dr. William
Schimmel.
A recent
review in the International Record Review states: "most
inspired of all is his (Hwang's) use of the accordion to provide the
harmonic filling: and in this he is served by the admirable William
Schimmel, whose subtlety is in itself one of the highlights of the
recording."
Jason Kao Huang worked closely with Dr.Schimmel in developing this
intricate part and Mr. Huang uses it as a bridge between his scoring
for western instruments as well as traditional Chinese instruments
such as the erhu and the pipa. The International Record Review lists
Dr. Schimmel as a character in the opera along with the singers. 'The
Floating Box' had its world premiere in 2001 at Asia Society in New
York. Juan Carlos Rivas conducted both the premiere and the recording.

Accordionist
Dazzles in Historic Memorial, Melbourne - Australia
Contributed
by Rob
Howard
Melbourne
witnessed one of its rare concerts to feature the accordion in a classical
setting. Visually impaired accordionist, Bernadette
Conlon, performed two concertos with the Melbourne based string
orchestra, The Melbourne Musicians at the prestigious St. John's Lutheran
church at Southgate, one of Melbourne's most coveted performance venues.
Bernadette performed New Zealand composer, Gary
Daverne's 'Concert
Waltz' for strings and accordion, which delighted the audience
with its sweeping Parisian style, as one newspaper critic put it.
She also performed Australia's first concerto for accordion and orchestra,
'Concerto for Bernadette', which she commissioned nine years ago,
from Melbourne composer, Michael Easton, which work Bernadette had
previously recorded for the Naxos label. This performance was a memorial
to Michael, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in London who died,
aged 54, last year.
Bernadette was critically acclaimed in Melbourne's daily newspaper,
The Age, as an accordionist, who played with "agility and relish
in her work", and that the concerto "brought home again
Conlon's
enthusiasm and talent".
