Midi
Concertina Concert, Stockport - UK
Contributed by Rob
Howard
John Nixon's demonstration concert of the midi concertina
at Stockport Accordion Club in the North of England proved to be a
most interesting evening, with John performing sounds and styles of
the Spanish guitar, clarinet, trumpet, panpipes, church organ, etc.
Using pre-recorded backing CDs, the audience heard a variety of sounds
for some numbers.
The tricky Benny Goodman composition 'Slipped Disc' was one of the
most memorable items, using clarinet backed by a rhythm section. John's
'string quartet' performance of Mozart's 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik'
was a startling combination of 2 violins, viola and cello. Some of
the concertina purists in attendance seemed to be sceptical about
the uses and potential of midi, but we did have a most enjoyable performance
from John Nixon.
John Nixon is one of the UK's leading concertina players, and has
worked with the likes of Henry Mancini, Barbara Streisland, Paul McCartney,
and accordionists Frank Marocco, Jack Emblow, Harry Hussey and Marcel
Azzola.
